Lackawaxen River Watershed

The Lackawaxen River Watershed covers almost 2/3rds of Wayne County and 1/3rd of Pike County. Here are some statistics:

  • 598 Square Miles
  • 248 Major Lakes
  • 610 miles of streams
  • 29 Municipalities
  • Includes Parts of 4 Counties
  • West Branch of the Lackawaxen River – 16 miles long
  • Lackawaxen River – 31 miles long

The headwaters of the West Branch of the Lackawaxen River begins at Lake Belmont.

The lake is a pristine 172 acres in northern Wayne County owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and managed by the Fish and Boat Commission for public fishing and boating. Just a few miles downstream is the Pleasant Mount State Fishing Hatchery, where the river serves as the hatchery’s primary source of water.

Further south is the confluence of the West Branch and Johnson Creek in Creamton. As the West Branch goes further south, the river runs into Prompton Lake, a 290 acre manmade lake and earthen dam used for flood control and recreation. The lake and dam was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and completed in 1961 after major flooding took place in Honesdale and Hawley in1942 and 1955. Prompton Dam is where the West Branch ends and the Lackawaxen River begins.

The Lackawaxen River runs south through Prompton to the confluence of the Lackawaxen and Van Auken Creek. The river, at this point, runs easterly into Honesdale, where it is joined by the Dyberry Creek. A few miles north on the Dyberry, another dam had been constructed in 1959 by the Army Corp of Engineers. It is a “Dry Dam” named after General Edgar Jadwin, built strictly for flood control.

At the confluence of the Dyberry and the Lackawaxen in Honesdale the river runs southeastly along Route 6 through Honesdale and continues toward Hawley. Just before the Hawley borough on Route 6 is the D & H Canal Lock # 31, where there is still remnants of the D & H Canal and towpath from 150 years ago.

In Hawley, the river merges with Middle Creek and the Wallenpaupack Creek. The Wallenpaupack Creek has been a dry bed since 1927, when the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company dammed up the creek and built a 44,000 KW hydro-electric power plant. Lake Wallenpaupack is a 5,700 acre lake, 13 ½ long with 52 miles of shoreline. PPL built the power plant 3 ½ miles downstream where it dumps into the Lackawaxen in Kimbles.

Today, Lake Wallenpaupack is a major tourist attraction with thousands of lake homes. It provides Pike and Wayne Counties with many recreational opportunities and millions of dollars in tourist revenues each year.

As the Lackawaxen continues in a westerly path towards the Delaware River there are many tributaries, including the Teedyuskung Creek, Blooming Grove Creek, Falls Creek, Mill Creek, O’Donnell Creek and others.

From just outside Hawley the river runs for many miles along the “Towpath” road. There are many areas along this roadway where there are remnants of the original canal. Take a drive along this beautiful and magnificent road and see history right before your eyes!

At the confluence of the Lackawaxen and the Delaware Rivers are two major tourist attractions – The Roebling Bridge and the Zane Grey House. Both attractions are part of the National Park Service
